Stay tuned for updates on the trip.

New Orleans Trip–We’re home

We arrived home on Saturday, June 21, around 9:00 PM, later than I had anticipated.  The stops for breakfast, at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans, and then brunch in Mississippi, took longer than anticipated.  But that was ok as it gave us more time to talk about the trip, plan for the future, and enjoy each other’s company.

We got to know one another and really did enjoy each other.  At times, we may, no probably did get on someone’s nerve, but our morning devotion time and your prayers helped to diffuse the situation.  God is in control of everything and the little items which fell into place were so evident of this fact.  I ordered 15 devotions books, even though only 13 were going.  I had ordered 13 T-shirts, but 14 were delivered.  Why the extra?  On the Wednesday before we left on Saturday, Chuck Wood called and stated his job for the next week had cancelled.  He asked if it was too late to go?  Of course not.  What a help to have Chuck be there.  The first house we went to needed a lot of work–drywall, electrical, plumbing–and Chuck was able to do most it although there was so much work we couldn’t complete it.  All of us worked at that house the first two days.  Chuck stayed at that house the whole week as did Rob and David Beck, Randall and Ipek, and Lindsay Beck (except for Friday).

The rest of the week the rest of us weed trimmed, cut grass, cut trees, painted, and Chris reframed the windows on a house due to termite damage.  The girls–Rebecca Beck, Jennie and Jamie Ridgley, and Ashley Rice learned how to use a chain saw.  We did have several opportunities to present the gospel to different homeowners.

In the evenings, we assisted Berean church (where we bunked) in a VBS at a housing project.  What a blessing to each of us as we looked forward to each evening.  I don’t want to give away too much now as we are looking forward to a Sunday evening presentation about our trip.  You will have to attend the evening service when we have our presentation.

Everyone on the trip was a blessing to me and I’m thankful they were there.  Here are a couple of pictures along with some artwork most of the group created on the last evening.

New Orleans 2008

Blessings to all of you:

A thank you from all of us for giving the funds to allow us to serve the Lord in New Orleans this week.

The Lord is teaching me much during this trip.  We are working for the Lord, not myself.  We painted a house Monday, among other jobs at this house, and did some of the trim on the front of the house in one color, which the husband didn’t object to.  One of the lady’s granddaughters, Kayla–7 years old and cute as a button, thought the color was pretty and thought her grandmother would too.  We found out when we returned on Tuesday morning she didn’t like the color, so we had to repaint the trim and vent on the front of the house.  Up the ladder I went again to repaint.  At first offended, but I realized we are doing this for the Lord and if it was my house and I wasn’t pleased, I would repaint it, “love your neighbor as yourself.”

We had a great tour of the devasted parts of New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina on Sunday by Lawrence, a Berean church member, which we will share with everyone during our presentation.  We had a tour of the 9th Ward, saw where some of the breaks in the levees occurred and why, saw that New Orleans is slowly coming back, but, also, some people have given up with the red tape in the bureaucracy and left town.  Houses are abandoned, lots are vacant, businesses and churches are boarded.

We are participating in Berean Bible Churches’ evening VBS this week, Amazon Expedition, in a housing project.  What an experience.  Everyone of us is enjoying the priviledge of serving Berean and the Lord in this capacity.  What a blessing that Jeff, Chris, and Kevin brought their guitars as they along with Lindsay and Rebecca are helping lead the singing for the VBS.  A learning and training experience for us for, perhaps, East St. Louis.

I was concerned about this trip as I didn’t feel there was enought planning, on my part and Berean’s part.   Once again, as the Word states, “be anxious for nothing“.  God had it all under control.  Berean has their act together and I was concerned for nothing.

We are looking forward to our return on Saturday, but it will, also, be a sad occasion to leave our ministry here.  But this is preparing us for future ministry opportunities.  Please keep us in prayer as we need to constantly be aware of the “divine opportunities” the Lord gives us.

 In Christ,

Lucky Wagner

Hello everyone!

This is Lindsay Beck. I’m out here in New Orleans with the rest of the missions team and just wanted to give yall back home a lil update and maybe get a small taste of some of the amazing things going on down here.

God is definitaly at work.  We have only been here 3 days(2 working, 1 settling in) and already have seen God working.  This week we are working at Mr. Diamond’s house.  We have been painting the outside of the house, putting up dry wall, mudding, taping, sanding, drilling, sweeping, and much more on the inside.  He has 2 beautiful grand-daughters who are staying with him and his wife(Ms. Vinny) for the summer. Kayla and Shaneesha(spellling?)  Today they helped us paing part of the house, and had such a wonderful spirit and attitude that all of us could not help but be happy just have a great time together with them. Their story is incredible to listen to, and they love to tell it.  They did not evacuate, but chose to wait it out.  They said the water was up to the second hinge on the door frame.  They are so thankful and grateful for the love that is shown them.  Ms. Vinny is a huge encouragement! She mentions “The Lord’s Work” anytime she can and has the most amazing attitude towards her “new start” God has given her. Please pray for the 2 grand-daughters, we do not know where they are spiritually, but I have had many opportunities to talk to them personally.  They are very open, and seem to understand who Jesus is, but we still are unsure where they are spiritually.

When we first got here we were very unsure about what we were going to be doing in the evenings.  The church here had nothing planned for us to do, no ministry, or work or anything.  The first night we were here they said that whoever wanted, had an opportunity to serve in their VBS they do in the housing projects about 1o mins away from the church.  This was very exciting to me, as well as the rest of the group. First because I love working with kids, very very much. And also because we finally knew what we were going to be doing in the evenings. Last night was the first night of VBS, and it was VERY different from what i imagined. We had ages from 6 months up to 14 years old.  Actually they 14 year old was the one who brought the 6 month old….who was her daughter. It was a very eye opening experince, but i cannot wait to go back tonight, and every night this week.  The lady who was in charge of music (Ms. Jamie) grabbed Becca, Chris, Kevin, Jeff and I as soon as she heard we all were musically talented.  It was exactly where I wanted to be.  With me on the piano, Becca singing, and the boys on the guitars, we led the kids in singing, and worshiping Christ.  They were very good at learning the words to the songs, and some of them already knew the songs.  They would make their own beats by hitting tables or stomping their feet and it was truly a joy to be part of that.  I could not stop smiling the whole time i was singing.  Even thought the kids were very hyper, and would just run everywhere, and talk whenever they wanted….they saw God’s love for them in many different ways.  Whether it was a hug from a counselor, or encouragement during games, or listening to their teacher when it came to Bible time.

It is also encouraging to see our group bond together every day.  We have group devotion every morning at 6am, and yes, it is early, but so worth it. Getting that time in with each other and with God has become a priority in everyones day.  And it shows in the attitudes and actions throughout the day.

We have also had a great time in the evenings playing basketball in the gym with the 2 other churches that are here, as well as some of the attendants of Berean Bible Church.  We have all ages out on the court, girls and boys, all playing knock out until anytime as late as 11:30pm.  Its a blast. Even those who do not play get into the action by cheering on their favorite, which is sometimes not even someone from their church group.  It is great to get to fellowship with other believers my age and get to know them, and develop relationships.  Its a new feeling for me since I’ve always been the quiet type and keep to myself and don’t make new friends.  God has changed me and showed me how encouraging and how necessary it is to take that step and make new friends, especially those who believe in the same incredible God as I do.

Well it is time for dinner and then another fun filled night of VBS.  Thank you for all your prayers and support. It is certainly needed, and appreciated!!!

ps-sorry if it is a little scatter brained, or something doesn’t quite make sense, i only had a few minutes between todays events, but wanted to write a little something for our family back home!! :)

2008 Katrina Relief Missions Trip

We left the church at 7:00 AM Saturday morning and arrived in New Orleans about 6:30.  The trip was uneventful and everyone remained in good spirits.  Praise the Lord! We settled into our rooms and rested well.

Sunday morning our Edgemont team met for worship and bible sutdy, then we worshipped together with the other missions teams and the Berean Bible Church.  We toured the city Sunday afternoon with one of the Berean church members and saw the sites of the levee breaks.  There is still much devestation and many areas (about 50% according to our tour guide) that still need to be rebuilt/restored.

There are two other missions teams staying at the Berean church with us: one with about 20 members from Wheaton, IL and one with 9 members from Salem OR.

Our work assignments so far are two single family dwellings.  One assignment is to install facia and soffit on the outside of a house and the other is to do work on a kitchen.

Thank you for your prayers.  They are being felt by all of us.

Katrina Relief Prayer Requests

1. Cohesiveness while working with one another.

2. Godly discernment, wisdom, and guidance in planning the trip, which is June 14-21.

3. Some people who are going don’t have paid vacation time - pray for provision for them during this time.

4. We would be used as servants of God as we, in all probability, will be working with unsaved people while helping them rebuild their homes.

5. Be diligent in our prayer time with one another.

6. Support would be sufficient for the trip.
